We had the good fortune of connecting with Angelica Medina Clay and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Angelica, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk taking has been the co-pilot in my life and career. I believe that the majority of the credit to why I feel I have lived such an exciting life so far has been due to the risks that I have taken. Taking risks has led me to live life on my terms, travel beautiful places, meet my husband, and start a floristry business that is rewarding in so many ways.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I believe I’ve always been creative and being partly raised by an interior designer had a lot to do with it, I think. I learned about color theory early on, flipped the pages of countless design magazines, and pricked my fingers too many times in my grandma’s tiny rose garden.

Fast forward to the planning of my wedding, I executed my vision with a ton of help from my family. Everything from the layout to the textures to the floral design was created by me and I loved every second of it. After my wedding, I planned several other events that included florals, but by then I already knew this was it! This is what I wanted to do!

Prior to starting Angelical Flowers, I had a career as a Paralegal and owned a fashion accessories business. I was also at some point a media consultant, a project coordinator, and dabbled into creating content. I think that my former adminstrative career along with my many side jobs were undoubtedly preparing me for my role as a business owner and floral designer.

While envisioning what my business could provide the lovely couples looking to secure a florist, I decided that Angelical Flowers would focus on creating beautiful yet sustainable designs that consist of foam-free mechanics. We love designing romatic garden-style florals for wedding and events in Southern California.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
San Diego is incredibly inspiring with all its attractions and ocean views. If you’re visiting my hometown, I would recommend checking out Balboa Park, and Coronado or Carlsbad Beach. For dining, there are tons of options in La Jolla, Little Italy, or along the Waterfront Pier, one of my favorite restaurants right now is Seneca. Don’t forget to explore the area where you choose to dine, chances are it’s near a beach, shopping strip, or a good time!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Thanks to the encouragement of who I’ve recently labeled the matriarch of the family, my aunt Celia, I ignored all fear-driven factors in starting Angelical Flowers. This beautiful lady in my life is full of grace, fun energy, and love that moves mountains. She has a nonchalant way of leading by example and encouraging her loved ones to follow their dreams.

My husband has also played an incredible supportive role throughout my business journey, which I am deeply touched by on a continuous basis. He’s the reason why my happy-tears exist.
