We had the good fortune of connecting with Amanda Ellis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amanda, what matters most to you?
I teach art classes for all ages and abilities. I work with a lot of students who get frustrated when things are not turning out the way they envisioned. I am a recovering perfectionist so I know how hard it can be to push through those feelings. My kids are neurodivergent and used to struggle deeply with their art not turning out the way they wanted, so we came up with a phrase we use all the time: “Take a mistake, and turn it into something awesome”. This is a mantra I teach to my students. I give my students full decision making when these situations come up, offering ways we could try something new, a way to reimagine what we made, or to just start over. Often times, with the encouragement of their peers, they will choose to work through things that feel like mistakes, and make them into something awesome. Being able to see that growth and resilience is one of my favorite parts of being an art teacher.

What should our readers know about your business?
A huge passion of mine is that art classes be accessible to all people, particularly those with disabilities. I have ADHD and my children are autistic and I am always trying to see art through the lens of disability. Art is for everyone, and I love creating a classroom atmosphere and curriculum that allows for adaptability in how my students interact with and experience art and creativity. I want all of my students to feel that they are accepted and loved exactly as they are. I also want art to be accessible so I try to have a variety of longer commitment 8 week art sessions as well as affordable pop in style art class options with sibling discounts, payment plans and scholarships. You can find all of my information on my website at www.amandaellisartist.com

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Ramona and we have so many hidden gems! I love to hike at the Ramona Grasslands, and Barnett Ranch Preserve and I love to grab an alaskan mocha at Main Street Coffee.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my mom who always allowed me and my siblings to use her artist quality art supplies with full trust. Her trust in us allowed us to feel important, responsible and creative. She is and always was gentle and kind and always supportive. My philosophies as a teacher are inspired by her love.
