We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex Cabrera and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alex, how has your background shaped the person you are today?

I am a true SoCal native. I was born and raised in sunny San Diego, Oceanside to be specific. I feel very fortunate having been raised in such a diverse and colorful community filled with people from all over. Although I grew up in San Diego I was raised in a Mexican household with two amazing parents that immigrated from Mexico.

Growing up, my parents knew that I would be immersed in American culture through school and my surroundings, however they never allowed me to lose touch with my Mexican roots. They would speak both English and Spanish in the house and would take us yearly to visit our family in Michoacán.

My parents have had the most impact on the person I am today. I was able to witness two loving parents who came from practically nothing, work hard, and make a living for themselves. My mother, an entrepreneur herself, became a business owner and continues to own her beauty salon after over 28 years. Unfortunately my dad passed away when I was 13 years old. After the loss, my mother took on the responsibility of both roles and knew that she would have to be tough in order to continue raising her four children. That year was life changing and truly made me realize that I would have to grow up at a much younger age in order to help my mother and family through this process.

Throughout the years of growing up, I feel like my dads passing has impacted me to be the person I am today. It taught me to enjoy every moment that life has to offer you and that hard work does pay off.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

My primary goal as a Mortgage Broker is to listen and assist my clients in securing the most suitable mortgage options based on their specific needs and financial circumstances. This role is very emotional and intimate as you are given the opportunity of helping people achieve a monumental moment in life. With that, I want to make sure that I am always paying attention to my clients needs and guiding them in the best direction possible in order to achieve a smooth transaction.

I started this journey over a decade ago when I worked for two major Banks as a personal banker. Throughout my undergraduate career, I helped people open bank accounts, credit cards, and handle sensitive information and with time I advanced to higher roles. However, once I graduated I moved to Los Angeles and pursued a dream of mine to work in the music industry.

Like most people, I came to LA with no connections and a big dream. I never envisioned myself as a musician but had aspirations of working in the music management/agency side. Through hard work I was fortunate enough to work for one of the biggest talent agencies in the world, WME which then led me to become a personal assistant to grammy award winning artist, Miguel. These positions allowed me to experience moments that I could only dream of, build my network, and travel to places that I have never been before. After spending 5 years working in entertainment and content that I was able to accomplish a dream of mine, I began to shift my interest towards Real Estate.

The past five years working as a Real Estate Agent allowed me to really hone in on the industry. I gained experience working for a top producing agent and worked closely with a Real Estate Attorney who emphasized the importance of contract management. I also further developed my interpersonal skills and established a good reputation amongst my peers… all while seeing some of the most expensive real estate this country has to offer.

I feel like my previous roles have led me to the position that I am in now as a Mortgage Broker. Personal banking taught me the importance of financial ethics; the entertainment industry taught me strong work habits; and being a Realtor taught me the importance of relationships and personal time management. I get the opportunity to finally morph all of my previous lessons and apply them to this role. Through the support of a great company, team, and even better mentorship, I am excited for this journey and I hope to one day also pay it back by being a mentor and inspiring others to be the best versions of themselves.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The best part about living in Los Angeles is the endless things to do, places to see, and incredible restaurants to eat at. I have lived in LA for nearly 10 years now and I still feel like I am new to the city with so much left to explore.

When friends visit me from out of town I make sure to take them to some of my favorite places. We would start the morning by going on a hike at Runyon Canyon or the Calabasas Stairs. From there we would catch breakfast at Blu Jam Cafe, Cafe Vida, or Fia for bottomless mimosas.

During the day it could vary from going to Universal Studios or soaking up the sun at Santa Monica beach. Towards later in the evening, dinner would be at one of the following few personal favorites; Sol Y Luna, Guelaguetza, Oste, Gracias Madre, Katsuya, Mastros, or Il Pastio. Recently I went to Nobu Malibu for the first time during sunset and I must say, I get the hype.

Depending on the type of night, we can catch a concert at the Hollywood Bowl, go explore bars in West Hollywood, or keep it very low-key and finish off with dessert from Salt & Straw.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I feel like I owe the success of my brand to the people that I surround myself with. As the saying goes “You’re a product of your environment, surround yourself with the best”.

In my personal life, I am very fortunate to have an amazing family and close group of friends that only want to uplift one another. My close group of friends have all established a name for themselves in their careers and continue to hit new milestones. Their ambition and drive only inspires me to be a better person. Most importantly we look out for one another as we all want to see each other win.

As for my professional life, I have been lucky to have some of the best mentors who all taught me how to be a better and successful entrepreneur. The passion for their work really motivated me to become a better individual. In real estate I worked alongside one of the top agents in town, Chad Rogers, who to this date has closed over $700+ Million. While working with Chad, he allowed me to partake on all aspects of the transactions and fully immerse myself in his deals allowing me to become a better agent.

Now working as a Mortgage Broker, I have the privilege to work and learn from one of the best Loan Officers in the nation, Ubaldo Leon. Aside from having closed more than $1 Billion in transactions and all of his accolades, his mentorship is one that is unbeatable. He truly cares for every member on his team and I am grateful that I have the opportunity to yet again work and learn from the best.

And last but certainly not least, my clients. Many of my clients are personal friends of mine, and if they are not, they definitely become close friends by the end of the transaction. My clients inspire me to be the best version of myself and also trust me to guide them through the process. I owe my current success to those that trusted me to be their advisor.

This shoutout is for the people around me that make me want to be the best version of myself.
