Meet Alan Silberstein | Co-Founder, ShipLab

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alan Silberstein and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alan, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
People who aren’t in the shipping and fulfillment industry might not fully realize how tricky it really is. We always ensure our operations are running smoothly and seamlessly for our clients, which makes what we do seem easy. This causes some folks to think that they can bring it in-house to do it themselves or cut corners. But without the right systems in place, they can end up with problems like lost inventory, delayed shipments, higher costs and ultimately, lower customer satisfaction. What may look simple from the outside actually involves a lot of behind-the-scenes work. Brands often find this out the hard way when they try handling it on their own and they always end up coming back for expert help.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
ShipLab is a San Diego-based eCommerce-focused order fulfillment and inventory management company, and we work with a wide range of businesses, from small startups to large name brands. What sets us apart is our commitment to providing our customers with simple, reliable and effective services. My co-founder and I are also eCommerce business owners, and we utilize ShipLab’s services for our own eCommerce companies, so we know first-hand how to create a seamless fulfillment experience for our clients from also being our own customers.
I’m especially proud of the strong relationships we’ve built with our clients, the trust we’ve earned and the positive reputation we’ve developed. But getting to where we are now wasn’t an easy journey —we’ve faced plenty of bumps along the way but overcame them by sticking to what we do best, not overpromising and being honest about mistakes. As entrepreneurs, we quickly learned that things rarely go as planned and the key is to be adaptable, flexible and learn from setbacks. We genuinely care about each brand that we work with, providing the best service we can and always following through on our promises.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting, I’d take them to some of my favorite places in San Diego. We’d start with delicious Mexican food, hitting up places like Tacos El Gordo, Taco Stand or Roberto’s for a California burrito. For sushi, I’d recommend Sushi Ota in Pacific Beach. We’d definitely hit the beach, checking out La Jolla to see the seals or spending time at the beach and boardwalk in Coronado. And if they’re into golf, playing a round at Torrey Pines is a must.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to give a huge shoutout to my wife and family for all of their support—my wife especially. I’ve also got to give a big thanks to our awesome team. They really care about doing a great job and treating each brand like it’s their own. We’ve got a fantastic crew, and I’m super proud of how hard everyone in the warehouse works.
