We had the good fortune of connecting with Adrian Lazos Martinez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Adrian Lazos, why did you pursue a creative career?
I chose an artistic and creative career because it’s all I know, it’s my calling and my destiny. Creating art is as natural to me as breathing. Whenever I’ve tried to follow a different path, I’ve felt miserable, like I’m suppressing who I truly am. Ignoring my creative instincts isn’t an option; the path has already been set before me. I just need the courage to follow it.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is deeply rooted in my Mexican culture, hip-hop, and the nostalgic vibes of my upbringing. What sets me apart is how I blend these influences with personal storytelling, creating music and art that feels both timeless and raw. My sound and paintings carry the essence of my experiences, from joy and love to struggles and resilience, making it relatable yet unique.
I’m most proud of how my art connects with people. Hearing that a song or a piece of art I created resonated with someone or helped them through a tough time is what keeps me going. I’m also excited about releasing music and paintings I’ve been holding onto, especially pieces that carry powerful stories from my life and culture.
It hasn’t been easy. My journey has been full of obstacles, from financial struggles to self-doubt. At one point, my daughter and I didn’t even have a stable place to stay, but even in those tough moments, I kept writing, creating, and pushing forward.
I overcame challenges through sheer persistence and the support of my loved ones. I reminded myself why I started—because art is my calling and the core of who I am. Leaning on the kindness of others and finding inspiration in my struggles helped me push through.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is to never ignore your passion. It’s easy to let fear or life’s obstacles steer you away from your purpose, but staying true to your calling brings a sense of fulfillment that nothing else can replace.
I want the world to know that my art is an extension of my life and heart. My brand, Children of the sun and my name, Cabezita, is about authenticity, resilience and celebrating culture through music and art. Every song and painting I create is a piece of my story. A story that I hope inspires others to embrace their roots, overcome challenges and follow their dreams.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting, I’d take them to Chicano Park in Barrió Logan. That place feels like a second home to me. The murals and vibrant colors tell stories that hit close to my heart, especially the ones honoring farm laborers. Growing up in the valley and working in agriculture alongside my dad, picking fruits and vegetables under the hot desert sun, makes those pieces deeply personal.
For food and drinks, I’d rely on my local friends for recommendations. They always know the best hole-in-the-wall spots and a few hidden gems in the city. I don’t go out much, but they’ve never steered me wrong.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people who deserve recognition in my story—my daughter, my mom, my sisters, my brother. Without them, I’d be completely lost. I’m also eternally grateful for the earth angels who’ve helped me along the way. Like my former manager, who let my daughter and I sleep on their couch for 15 days when we had nowhere else to go. Or my mom, who lent me money when I was short on rent. My landlord, who gave me a break when I couldn’t pay. Elyse, who’s been here when I felt most alone in the city. My friend Abel, who opened his doors and let me record with him for free back in the day. And my friend Lisa, who would step in to pick up my daughter from school on days when I was running late and had no help. It’s these small acts of kindness, though they’re never really small—that make all the difference when you feel lost and alone. So, here’s to everyone who shows compassion in the moments it’s needed most.
