We had the good fortune of connecting with Abigail Bloom & Laura Huie and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Abigail Bloom & Laura Huie, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The success of our brand is based on our long-standing partnership. We’ve known each other since we were in high school, so our chemistry and communication with one another is paramount to our success. We started Bloom & Huie as a screenwriting duo whose goal is to write honest and witty female stories wrapped in unbelievable worlds. From half-hour pilots to feature length films, we like to hook the audience with off-kilter concepts but then make them stay for the heart, humor, and honesty. These are our core values and what makes our partnership so precious to us.

In addition to our own screenwriting projects, another goal of ours is to help bust down the doors of Hollywood, especially for fellow females and women of color. Realizing how gated Hollywood truly is, we strive to help women jumpstart their writing careers by offering industry guidance and branding advice online.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Currently, we’re most excited about our screenwriting projects. We’re in the middle of writing a feature film titled Virago, about a young Asian American woman who goes out on the lam to fulfill her grandma’s dying wish—to steal a priceless glass eye. The story is inspired by Laura’s childhood growing up in the South and dealing with her Asian American identity. We’re also excited about our two television projects: Pinky and You Worry Me. Pinky involves a strung-out Long Island foot model who awakens to find her pinky toe has been stolen and has to follow a trail of bizarre clues to track it down. You Worry Me is an action-adventure series where two female assassins are assigned to kill the other, but instead they dive into a reckless rampage across the California desert to take down their backstabbing boss.

Although our projects sound vastly different, what connects our writing is telling honest female stories within adventurous and fantastical worlds. It’s definitely not easy as two young females trying to break into the gated film industry, but we are determined to not give up. We’ve gotten to where we are today by the wonderful connections we’ve made so far. With this, we see everything as an opportunity no matter how big or small.

What we would like people to know about our story is that our main goal is to not only write about uniquely female experiences, but also make an impact on the industry itself. When we finally enter those gates, we plan to leave a lot of room for others like us.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
At the top of our list is The Huntington Botanical Gardens and Museums in Pasadena. It’s certainly one of the best places to experience nature and wind down from our usual busy lives. We’re also dedicated foodies, and our favorite restaurant in SoCal is Dos Besos; also in Pasadena. They have the best paella we’ve ever eaten! Our other favorite spots to eat include Bone Kettle, Casita, Bavel, and Din Tai Fung. Also, a wonderful place to relax and enjoy a drink is Bar Flores in Echo Park. Lastly, anyone visiting the city should check out if the Hollywood Bowl has any fun shows going on.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We wouldn’t be where we are without the help and constant support of Ruth Sabin, Senior Creative Executive at Pipeline Media Group. What started as a short phone call for screenwriting advice turned into a wonderful friendship between the three of us. She consistently offers constructive feedback and cheers us on as we navigate the film industry.
