We had the good fortune of connecting with Abby Aguilar and Lindsay Realegeno and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Abby and Lindsay, what do you attribute your success to?
Community. The inclusion of community has been the core foundation of what inspires us and brings us together. There is so much beauty, talent, and hard work that often times goes unseen and unheard in our community, and our goal is to showcase it and share it with the world. Homegirl Hour was therefore created with the intention of showcasing and sharing these unheard voices with the masses.

A factor behind some of the success of Homegirl Hour has been the community that we are able to reach. Abby resides in Los Angeles & San Diego, and Lindsay in the Bay Area, this allows for reach across two major regions in California. However,
we hope to soon expand our Homegirl Hour community beyond California. In the meantime we will continue to share our lovely community of the LA, SD, and Bay Area.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
We both have our BA in Broadcast Electronic Communications from SFSU (San Francisco State University). In fact, Homegirl Hour was born at KSFS Radio – SFSU student run station. Was it easy? Well, we both come from shared backgrounds and both grew up in the inner city of SD and LA, daughters of immigrants, and first generation Latinas. This had it’s own set of hurdles and obstacles that we had to overcome, but, it brought us together. Having similar backgrounds also brought similar interests and values which made our mission as women of color in media easy to navigate together.

Along this journey we have learned that sometimes we have to pave our own way, and we have to be the voices that we want to see represented. We want the world to know that Homegirl Hour goes beyond a podcast, it’s a culture, it’s community, and it’s the voices of the people.

What’s As two women of color in media they created Homegirl Hour, Homegirl Hour has paved the way and created an outlet and space to use their voice

in which we focus on using our voice to take up space in media.

What set’s Homegirl Hour apart from others is

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Great question! If you’re coming out for the weekend to the Bay Area, I will most definitely tell you to bring your hiking shoes. We’re going on an adventure into the lovely redwoods of Mt. Tamalpais- Cataract Falls to be precise, however, it’s a tough hike so we can keep it light and hang out at Golden Gate park, and check out the botanical gardens. Now, for the wining and dining, let’s head to the East Bay for drinks at Forbidden Island, and Pizza, we’ll finish off the night with some pinball!

If you’re visiting San Diego I’d say first and foremost, go check out a sunset by the beach, grab some tacos from Tacos El Gordo, walk around Chicano Park and if you find yourself in my hometown of Oceanside on a Sunday afternoon, go sit along the strand and watch the local Lowrider crews cruise until the sun goes down.

Now, if you’re in Los Angeles, there’s tons of art to check out! Whether that’s checking out a museum or hitting up your local galleries–and I promise the music won’t be too far. We can cruise over to Korea Town for drinks at Normandie Bar, and literally the BEST Korean cuisine you can think of. And don’t forget we need to make a pit stop at the beach or cruise the PCH.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We love shoutouts! Within the first season of the Homegirl Hour we have had the pleasure of hosting and interviewing a variety of talented individuals from our community.

This includes Juana Esquivel, Checka Sardina, Andres Rivas, CannaXicana Club, Asia-The Foodie Bitch, Ryan Holloway, En Mi Palma & Ratas Rags

Our guests range from artists, scientists, to community leaders.
