Meet Tony Murrietta | Photographer & Film Maker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Tony Murrietta and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tony, how do you think about risk?
I feel like taking risk is something everyone does on a daily basis, whether it’s going to work, going to the store or starting a business. There’s always a risk in everything, and I feel that taking risk is essential to getting to where we are supposed to be in life and without it we would be stuck in the same place and situation for the rest of our lives if we don’t allow ourselves to take risk. For myself, I love to work on passion projects with video and photography with other artists in different cities and areas in California, but due to previous experiences while driving, I hate driving. But I know that in order for me to accomplish what it is I’m looking and getting to where I want to be, no matter how long the drive, I will take that risk considering the consequences of driving driving a prolonged period of time because I know the reward and what I am trying to create will be worth the risk. But when it comes to taking risk, I always make sure I am prepared and setting myself up for success “just in case”, whether it’s making sure I have air in my tire, making sure I have a place to stay, food to eat, gas in my car and money for an emergency. Setting myself up for success is the most important thing when taking risk and always being prepared for the worst is essential to ensure I will get to where I want to be.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
One thing that sets me apart from other artist is the way I express myself through photography. To me, photography is generally my prospective on the rest of the world, sharing the way I view subjects and nature and not having to follow a set of rules. Basing my photography on my prospective is what sets me apart from other artists because my prospective is different from everyone else’s.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had a friend that came down for the week, I generally would show them the nature sides of the city, the hills, the beaches, some of the small businesses and the quiet areas away from the crowded noisy parts of the city. Occasionally, we could visit the more tourist attractions and busy areas where there might be popular tourist attractions worth seeing, but sticking to the areas where it is more peaceful is where I would prefer sticking around, but I wouldn’t mind getting a second opinion from my friend if there is anywhere he or she would like to visit for the week.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
A couple of very important people that I definitely would like to shoutout and give credit to that helped me get to where I am today would be, for one, my parents for providing me with the essentials and giving me the opportunity and support that I needed for me to get to where I am today. Another person would be my high school art teacher, Mrs. Bowers for inspiring me and providing me the tools and allowing me to be creative and to express myself in my craft. My high school English teacher Mr. Hopper for teaching me self accountability and to make wise choices and to be a responsible adult in my life; My high school economics teacher Mr. Summers and his wife Mrs. Summers for giving me the encouragement and opportunities to express myself; My dance instructor Ms. Becks for all the love, support, opportunities and techniques she has provided me that have been essential in my line of work and have helped me become a better artist; Lastly, My best friends and collaborators Angel Orozco, Yingru Huang and many of my other collaborators and good friends that have helped bring my ideas and visions to life and have encouraged me since the very beginning and are there for me till this very day!
