Meet Miguel Ortiz | Hoops413 Owner & Basketball Coach

We had the good fortune of connecting with Miguel Ortiz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Miguel, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Life is all about taking risks. If I had never taken the risk to start my basketball camp, I would have never been able to enjoy the journey that it has taken me on. I have always been a big risk-taker. Once I put my mind to it, I have to see it through. If it doesn’t work out, it is a lesson learned and sometimes a skill learned, and I move on to the next risk. I took the risk to leave me 9-5 and give my basketball program 100% of me, and since then, numbers have grown, and we have been featured on the news and talk shows. Taking a risk is how I was able to achieve my dreams.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets us apart from others is that we are coaches, but Kaitlin, Sheldon, and I are also in the educational field. I was a preschool teacher for 15yrs before running the basketball program full time. When we approach coaching the children, we approach each child in a way that sets them for success on the court and in life. We work on the complete package, basketball skills, social and emotional skills, and an understanding of how to become a better, caring person.
I have always played basketball since a young age and have also coached basketball for over 10yrs. My mentor once told me my gift was in teaching, but that doesn’t necessarily mean being a teacher. Using that mindset, it was easy for me to transition into the coaching lifestyle full time because I am still teaching, and that’s where my heart will always be at.
We want our camp to be known as giving back to the community. We have done numerous community events, and we want to show everyone that love conquers all and sports brings so many people together.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am a very laid-back guy. Most of the time, you can find me at the movies watching the newest film out. If you are looking for a great coffee spot, then Corridor Flow in Lomita Ca is the place for you. The environment is relaxing and refreshing, and once you go there, you will never want to leave.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
This is awesome!! I believe everyone always deserves their roses. I want to give a major shoutout to Sheldon Campbell. Without him, Hoops413 never happens. I came to him with the idea of starting a basketball program, and with no hesitation, he said yes, which was 4 1/2 yrs ago. I will forever be grateful for all the time and effort he has put into helping make this program successful.
My next shoutout is to my girlfriend, Kaitlin Leguidleguid. She is the face of our Toddler program. Her dedication to the camp, the children, and patients for me “haha” took this camp to another level. She is my partner and a fantastic coach and will be a great mother to our future Son. We are expecting July 31st, 2022.
My parents get a huge shoutout. They are the welcome team at the Camp, and all the parents love and respect them and look forward to speaking with them every Saturday morning. No one walks in without getting a great greeting from my parents, and that’s just awesome to see. Also, my parents are just always behind my ideas and have supported me on this amazing journey.
To my staff, “Dylan and Junuh,” you guys are awesome. The growth I have seen in both of you makes me so proud to have you guys a part of our team, and I can not wait to see what the future holds for you guys.
