Meet Jennifer King | Beauty Professional

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer King and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jennifer, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Ive been in love with doing hair since i was a kid !! I knew I wanted to become a hairstylist for sure at the age of twelve. I have been license for sixteen years. I went to beauty school right after graduating high school. I was able to work a full time job and achieve my Bachelors degree in business all while still building a clientele. It’s having the freedom and control of my work schedule which gave me tons of flexibility to do so much in between.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a licensed Cosmetologist. I’ve been doing hair since I was a young child. I was the person in the neighborhood that you would go to get your braids done, hair flat ironed, or curled, need an updo for a school dance, I did that. It was honestly a natural progression for me to become professionally licensed. I’m Certified in Body Waxing & Make up & love Fashion the beauty industry is my happiness. Styling hair is my art. The way it transforms the person, awakens their confidence and literally changes the way they walk– I absolutely love it.
I specialize in healthy hair, known for silk pressing, ponytails, and extensions/wig unit construction. I believe what sets me apart from others is my attention to detail. I go above and beyond to exceed my customers expectations. I strive to create an inviting experience for every customer that sits in my chair, making them feel heard, comfortable, and more importantly, leaving my chair feeling brand new and revitalized. I am huge on energy, I only want positive welcoming energy around me, so that’s what I put out for others. My journey to this point wasn’t easy. In 16 years I’ve experienced some major personal challenges. I lost my mom, have a strained relationship with some of my siblings, struggled between supporting myself through different corporate jobs while still doing hair. During this time, I also attended college and earned a bachelor’s degree in Business. My fear of failure has always pushed me to keep excelling no matter what the obstacle is.
More recently, I’ve become the primary caretaker for both of my grandparents as they have both declined healthwise. I moved out of my apartment to move in and take care of them, taking a pay cut to do so. Sometimes there are sleepless nights, serious exhaustion, and now we are seeing a second round of the Covid spike.
I share all this to show that my life has not been easy whatsoever, but I have never given up on myself. I always get back up. I am still pushing myself to be the best version of myself because me at my best, makes me better for those that need me, my clients, my grandparents, and all the other important relationships in my life. I’m working out, carving out time for self-care, spending time with loved ones, planning, setting goals and achieving them. I’m also continuing to educate myself in my field because i truly believe, you can never stop learning.
I am more intentional, keeping my faith strong, and continuing to pray everyday for strength and guidance.
I want the world to know that I have so much more to show and that I truly love what I do.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well since the Covid-19 shutdown, Black owned businesses have opened up and are thriving. Louisiana Purchases is such a vibe, bomb food and drinks so many different options to choose from. Surf N soul is bussin with flavor lol. Food is made fresh to order and they sell out so you know it’s fire. I love BBQ so I’d have to say Bowlegged B.B.Q the whole Ambience gives Big backyard BBQ energy..I love the customer service and food. You can’t go wrong at any of the beaches or Bays here in San Diego. There’s so many places to enjoy on the water such as the Harbor Or Seaport Village. My Bestfriend and I could literally have so much fun everywhere out here, as long as we have each other and a drink or two we’re good.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I wanna shout out the leading Lady in my life; My Grandma aka Mama . She’s my everything she’s the reason I’m licensed she was my State Board model and my study Buddy the whole time I was in Beauty school she knew tht book front to back just like me. No-one has supported me throughout my career like her. I’m truly grateful for her existence. I also have a few clients who are my dear friends now, they love and support me and it shows extra special S/O to Kara an absolute sweetheart she doesnt play about her Hair or hairstylist (me) lol. My Business partner Quinn who has been on this Journey with me encouraging, inspiring, assisting & tag teaming from the beginning. And last but not least my Girlfriend Ashley, she’s been so helpful sharing amazing business tips and advice.
