We had the good fortune of connecting with Bright Coal ( Josh Whiting ) and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bright Coal, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I’m a big believer in “niching down” and finding a super specific tribe of people to serve with your creative skills. For me, this is logo design and churches / youth groups. I see a lot of bad design in “church world”. I love serving the local church and feel honored to be able to bring my experience in advertising and branding to help out!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I feel way too lucky to get to do what I do. I love my clients (churches). I love designing logos. I love doing absurd promos / videos. I’ve been doing these as a solo freelancer, under the monicker Bright Coal for the past few years, but I was recently brought on by Vive Media to establish and lead the new Brand Department.

I keep waiting for someone to tell me the fairytale is over, but I wake up each day and get to keep drawing pretty pictures on my computer for money.

If you’d like to see some of my work, check out the website or instagram!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Maestros Steakhouse.. I never knew food could taste this good. I almost smuggled some of the dipping sauce for the bread out in a to-go cup. My mouth is watering right now thinking about it.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There have been a TON of folks in my corner that have helped me along the way. I think what might serve this audience the best though is a coach (a Cali native) I hired last year that seriously helped me refine my vision and presence: Christian Cannon.

A book that I recommend to virtually every other designer / creative I meet is Positioning for Professionals. If you’re interested in getting specific about what you do and standing out from the pack, it’s got some challenging questions in there to get you pointed in the right direction!
