We had the good fortune of connecting with Freddy Punches and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Freddy, we’d love to hear more about your end-goal, professionally.
The end goal is to be the elder version of myself, like 60 or 80 years old. That would be something. I would still be invested in my aspirations in some form or another but knowing that I lived my life as the owner and main operator of my own record label would be as high as I could take it.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The songs are therapeutic. Whether I feel bad or good writing a song makes me feel great. Especially when it’s one of those pop up songs I have just doing my thing, you know? In it, I’m by myself like an outcast, the people around me have always inspired but I too have always had this idea where not succeeding sounds absurd to me, I don’t get it. I can handle being broke, that’s temporary but to imagine going through the rest of my life not pushing myself, yeah, that’s whack in my book.

It hasn’t been easy, it’s been fun, and to mention most of all, being calm & collected through treacherous times helped, it helped a lot. Most times I felt most defeated were really instances stretched in my mind, on repeat like the records I play,

And It’s good, I’m excited to show up, once I’m heard, once I’m seen, we’ll all be on the same page. I’ve been working on these records for a long time,

Respect, Accountability, and Privacy. And they spell rap, would you look at that. I want the world to know music is of high value to us, and it shall be treated as such.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would start at Pappalecco, get the hot chocolate Nutella combo if its the am or late evening, gelato if its mid day. King & Queen Cantina for lunch & a drink, that’s a must. Puesto in La Jolla is nice too, Tamarindo shrimp & the citrus cured ceviche speaks for itself. And I’m a fan of cars, the Lambo lot isn’t far from that joint. I’m just looking there though, for now. I’d take them check out the beaches, Long walks or short walks, depending on the wind, feel me? Chicano park, Balboa Park, I’m into museums & art so I’d definitely take my folks to the museum of us. If it was my mom visiting, I’d take her to Peohe’s, last time I was there I ordered steak & twin tail lobsters I know she’d love it. I’d take my folks surfing too, Tourmaline is where I’ve had the best experience. And in terms of an itinerary, well we’d do it as we desire, we got time.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There’s a lot of people, Sam, Kombeze, my Tio Izzy. People I see everyday and people who are gone now. My Grandpa foremost though, I’d say. His passing has been tough for us, and it has also been a coming of age for us. Us as in myself, my brother Melchor, my cousin Eddy, all the cousins. We aren’t little anymore, most of them have families and are succeeding in their own ambitions, this is for them.
