We had the good fortune of connecting with Malke Brookler and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Malke, what role has risk played in your life or career?
When I first thought of creating my business, The thought of having my own schedule since I had just become a first time mom back then was something ideal yet being my own boss and self-motivation had its risks. As a creative person, the ideas are limitless and there is no other word than risk when it comes to opening your own business. In my opinion, however you don’t know until you try and that is exactly what I did. I am so happy I did and I wouldn’t have changed it for anything. I started by taking clients just on the weekends slowly to see if that’s what I wanted but then it was clear to me I needed to make that first jump and go all in to make my dream a reality.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My business Detalles by M is a mix of the things that I enjoy most doing, Creating and capturing. I am a professional photographer and event stylist. I love curating beautiful events from beginning to end and being part of so many of my client’s most special days. Detalles means details in Spanish and that’s what I focus on. I have an eye for all those little details which makes my art unique. To say owning your own business is easy would be a lie but the reward is worth it. As an artist, I am always learning new things and implementing it to my business has been rewarding for me and for my clients. Being a working mom of 3 (almost 4 since I am in my last month of pregnancy) has probably been the most challenging part of owning my business. Balance is key and it’s hard to get to the point to where you feel like you have achieved it. At first, I didn’t have many limits and would work at all times of the day and night. I have learnt to set limits for myself so that I don’t burn out and I can give to both my family and my clients in the best way possible. Believing your worth is also an important part of growing your business and saying no is something necessary at times if a client is not the best fit. I am always asking myself how I can best give to my clients the experience they deserve and when it comes to events making them as stress free as possible. I know for some, being in front of the camera can be overwhelming so I use prompts to make them break that stiffness and enjoy the session.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
San Diego is so full of amazing places which is why I love being a photographer here. You literally have the best of sceneries and weather almost year round. I really love Coronado’s charm. It feels like vacation the second you go on that bridge. I would go to the small shops, visit a nice coffee spot there. From there, I would go to the ferry landing and enjoy the view of the water with the beautiful skyline. We would take the ferry to Seaport Village and go enjoy the life of Downtown San Diego. Another great place I love to take people who are visiting is The Cove in La Jolla and the Scripps pier. A great more secluded and beautiful beach is Windensea beach for both photographing and visiting. For a more architectural and interesting adventure, Balboa park is a great place to visit. I honestly could go on and on of the beautiful spots we have.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Success doesn’t just happen over night unless maybe if you win the lottery or something. Looking back 8 years to where I am now in my business is amazing to see and I encourage everyone who is thinking about just starting to not compare themselves to others. If I were to say how you find success is to recognize community vs competition. Early on I joined groups of entrepreneurs like me and was happy to mentor and get mentored back in the areas where I was struggling. Of course the support from my family when it came to watching my children during the times I needed to work and my husband being encouraging as well as proud of my work helped tremendously in getting to where I am today. Being happy for others in the business without the feel of competition opened up a whole world to me that I wouldn’t have or would’ve taken more years for me to get there.
