We had the good fortune of connecting with Justin Ehrlich and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Justin, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
That we’re all in this together. Supporting people through chronic complex health struggles has really shown me just how similar we all are, despite all of our apparent differences. Although what causes our struggles is often different, our human experience with our struggles is so often the same. I’ve been fortunate to see the shared humanity behind the challenges of my clients and this has really helped me to see the shared humanity in everyone. Being able to see and actually feel that connection has enriched my life and my relationships in countless ways.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Running your own business is rarely easy. Certainly, that’s been the case for me as well. However, the biggest challenge in my business is growing to meet the unique needs of each of my clients. Part of the beauty and power of Chinese medicine is in how it integrates physical, emotional, and spiritual health. As a practitioner, I have to be able to meet my clients on each of these levels to support their healing. This is especially the case when a client doesn’t believe one of the three is impacting the others. Over the years, I’ve gotten better at this through integrating my own life and my own struggles. The more I step into my own life, the more I can show up for my clients. I think one of the strongest points of my ‘brand’ is in how my clients feel seen, heard, and not judged for who they are. The judgment of ourselves, and by others, is one of the biggest blocks in healing very chronic struggles. Socially or traumatically programmed beliefs are often major roadblocks to healing. Seeing my patients accept themselves more fully, and being part of the healing that comes from that, is some of the most rewarding parts of my work.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There are a lot of great places in San Diego. I’d want to take them to the beach and the mountains since we have both here. For the beach, I’d probably lean into places like Swami’s and Moonlight up in Encinitas. Maybe Black’s or the Shores in La Jolla, along with the Cove. For the mountains, I’m fond of the Laguna’s and the area around Big Laguna Lake. Balboa Park and Sunset Cliffs are also usually pretty popular destinations. For food, obviously, tacos would be a must in San Diego. I love Tacos El Gordo and City Tacos, but there are really so many good places here. We have some great sushi at Soichi Sushi and Sushi Tadokoro. BLAH (Blind Lady Ale House) remains one of my favorite places to eat, although so many of these places are only open for takeout these days. Tribute Pizza also makes some amazing pies. I think a visit to Chino Farms and Catalina Offshore Products would be necessary as well. Maybe a drink at Realm of the 52 Remedies…
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My clients are without a doubt my best teachers. They teach me about humanity every day and help me learn how to show up with direct and caring honesty about the human journey and its struggles.
