Meet Federico y Roberto Escoto+Carrara: Painters & Photographers

We had the good fortune of connecting with Federico y Roberto Escoto+Carrara and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Federico y Roberto, what inspires you?
We have always been artists obsessed with form and color, classical, Pre-Raphaelite and Impressionist artists have a great impact on our vision and work. We have developed an almost hyper-realistic technique based on digital images, something very similar to what happened with painting and photography in the 19th century. We make paintings that look and shine like digital images without these two tools competing with each other, rather complementing each other. Women have been our recurring theme located in different situations and moments of contemplation and thought.  

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
We believe that we are dedicated to one of the most beautiful professions in the world, however everything has a price. Being your own boss places you in a situation of great responsibility and commitment, if something goes well it is your own merit and if something goes wrong it is your fault. The career of artist has many ups and downs, you have to make a lot of sacrifices and efforts to get your work noticed. There are many joys along the way but there are also many sadnesses and frustrations, however, moving forward over and over again creates a tough skin for bad situations and what previously hurt you, over time they turn into things that only do you stronger and more capable, your work goes through these changes as well. Our work is based on extremely intense colors for which we would very much like to be remembered as artists who loved color frantically and who generated fresh formulas for its appreciation.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We live and work in Mexico City and it is huge, its size and location allow it to have many “micro climates”, for example, we are located in the southwestern part and in this place the mountain climate prevails, which is cold. In this place, a national park called Desierto de los Leones is located next to the city and it has a beautiful former colonial convent in its slopes that is little known by tourists. Also in the central part of the city there is a museum / house in the Roma neighborhood called Museo Soumaya-Casa Guillermo Tovar de Teresa, which by the way has free entrance and is a beautiful, peaceful house from the Porfirian era and very close from many great restaurants and bars.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We would like, today and always, to thank our families and friends because they have ALWAYS had faith in us and in our work, the life of an artist is extremely difficult for different reasons but nothing helps as much as having a loving and supportive family behind you.
