We had the good fortune of connecting with Kat Kerth and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kat, where are you from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
To make a very long story short, I was born in South Korea, but I am from New Zealand. After completing my Bachelor of Design in Fashion Design, I moved to London to gain my Master’s then worked for a fashion company where I was able to be a part of Paris and London Fashion Week. During my time in London, I met my American husband, and we decided to move to San Diego, California. With my skills, knowledge, and industry experience, I started Kat Kerth Studio, feeling confident  to stand on my two feet. Having worked with some amazing design companies,  it has helped  the  design  and  production process in my own business. I  feel  fortunate to implement and demonstrate  all the years of practice  in  producing high-quality work with  Kat Kerth Studio.  Aesthetically, my travel experiences and diverse background inspire a lot of the vibrant colors, subject matter, and lines of Kat Kerth Studio. I love to look back on my favorite memories in New Zealand with all the fantastic surf beaches and lush greenery, the idyllic and colorful houses in Italy, and the beautiful blooms during the springtime in South Korea. These memories influence my art and prints. I am currently based in San Diego, California; the landscape and lifestyle here are starting to have an impact on my collections. I feel so lucky to have traveled the world and look forward to injecting more of that spirit of adventure into Kat Kerth Studio.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Kat Kerth Studio’s collections of carefree-meets-cool designs art prints are bound to elevate and uplift the mood of your living space! The infectious, whimsical spirit that carries through colorful gradients, free flowing shapes and lines are reflective of my own ultra-upbeat outlook on life. I am actually a graphic designer by day and any spare moment I get, I work on Kat Kerth Studio. If you have an idea, go for it! You might have to give up some sleep to generate a product/idea, but it is totally worth it! Creating art, learning new skills, meeting new clients and other businesses through Kat Kerth Studio is one of my greatest joys! If it means I have to sacrifice some Netflix for Kat Kerth Studio, I am totally cool with that!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ooh great question! There are so many good places to hit in San Diego, but I would start the day off with some aerial yoga and brunch at Trilogy Sanctuary! Coming from New Zealand, I can be a bit of a coffee snob at times, so my friends and I would probably try out a few coffee spots around town to find the best flat whites. We would go swim and spend the whole day in OB or PB to experience the beach life of San Diego. The next day, we would go to the Living Coast Discovery Center and bond with some of the marine animals, birds, and learn more about the San Diego wildlife. After some learning, we would definitely hit up my favorite restaurant Madison in University Heights. They have a très chic outdoor dining space with great vibes. Food and drinks taste and look just as good! To end the weekend, we would just chill out in my backyard on the hammock and banter about deep and meaningful stuff. I would pick some oranges from my tree for my friends so they can have some souvenirs to take back home.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Underwood Letterpress taught me kindness and demonstrated how you can collaborate with other fellow creatives and businesses as well as support to create a win-win situation.  Creative director for Paper Mache Tiger and Etre Cecile taught me that relationships are everything to advance your business. My husband, Trevor – I am the dreamer, and he is practical. He often builds all my display stands for my meetings/markets. Trevor hangs all my floating shelves and my art in Kat Kerth Studio.
