We had the good fortune of connecting with Carl H. Gregory and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carl, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind my success, and the success of my practice and brand, is an unwavering work ethic paired with clear, forward-looking intentionality. Determination gets you through the door, but sustained growth comes from consistently keeping your eyes on where you want to be rather than where you’ve been.

I evaluate every decision, big or small, not by my current circumstances, but by the future standard of success I am actively building toward. This is the exact same mindset and tactic I teach my clients every day: when you shift your perspective from reacting to present pressures to actively making choices grounded in your future vision, discipline transforms into daily momentum. I believe in practicing what I preach, and aligning my own daily grit with a clear long-term vision has been the single greatest driver of my personal and professional trajectory.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets my career apart is that my path to clinical practice wasn’t built entirely in an academic bubble—it was forged in the field. Before sitting in the therapist’s chair, I spent a full career as a first responder. I have seen people on their hardest days, witnessed profound trauma, and navigated severe personal and operational challenges of my own along the way.

The journey wasn’t easy. I balanced the demanding reality of shift work, earned my degrees while raising a family, and pushed all the way through to the doctoral level. Following my honorable retirement, I dedicated myself to translating that real-world experience into clinical excellence, becoming an advanced certified clinical trauma specialist and neuropsychotherapist.

What I am most proud of is bridging the gap between lived experience and high-level neuroscience-informed care. Having walked through dark places myself, I don’t just teach resilience and forward-looking tactics from a book, but from lived experience.

What I want the world to know about my brand and story is simple: Trauma and high-pressure environments don’t have to define the rest of your life. Through my private therapy practice, my books, The Architect of Self podcast, and my guided journals, my entire ecosystem is built to give people actionable tools, deep clinical insights, and the unwavering belief that it is entirely possible to move through adversity and build a meaningful, thriving future.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend came to town, the week would be an active, high-energy tour of San Diego’s best trails, ocean swells, elite gyms, and local food scene.

The Active Adventures: We’d start mornings with open-water swims at La Jolla Cove or Sunset Cliffs, high-intensity strength sessions at Fit Athletic Club or World Gym PB, and gravel rides through Lake Hodges or the Bayshore Bikeway. For hiking, we’d hit Torrey Pines State Reserve for coastal sandstone trails and Cowles Mountain in Mission Trails for panoramic county views.

The Eats & Hangouts:

Pizza: Wood-fired sourdough pies at Tribute Pizza in North Park, TNT Pizza in East Village for Detroit-style slices, or classic Neapolitan at Buona Forchetta.

Sushi: Top-tier omakase at Himitsu in La Jolla, Soichi, or Hidden Fish.

Drinks & Sunset Spots: Craft cocktails at Bacari in North Park, fresh seafood at Mabel’s Gone Fishing, or sunset picnics on the cliffs in Ocean Beach.

What makes San Diego special is that you can fit an intense gravel ride or ocean swim in the morning, work out at a world-class gym by mid-day, and end the evening eating Michelin-recognized sushi by the coast. The energy here is completely driven by people who prioritize an active, outdoors-first lifestyle.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate this Shoutout to my clients. They drive, motivate, and inspire me daily. I am truly fortunate to walk alongside such incredible individuals, witnessing their strength and resilience even after emerging from some of their darkest places.
