Meet Regina Gerrato- Greenhaus

We had the good fortune of connecting with Regina Gerrato- Greenhaus and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Regina, how does your business help the community?
Many families are unfamiliar with the college application process especially if they are going through this for the very first time. Others may come from another state outside of California and they are not familiar with the public university system. Independent educational consultants can help demystify the overall process including the required coursework. In addition the work that independent counselors do often takes the pressure off the high school counselor who is working with over 100 students on their caseload. Many independent counselors also do pro bono work and help serve first generation students. Greenhaus College Consulting has done pro bono work with Scholar Match, the Matchlighters Scholars, The Preuss School and YALLA San Diego. When more students successfully apply and attend college, their communities benefit from higher graduation rages, stronger career outcomes and a more educated workforce. Independent Advisors can also help students to advocate for themselves and ensure that students have equal academic opportunities both in high school and at the college level. They often link students to academic tutoring, test preparation, internships, and help them prepare for their future.

What should our readers know about your business?
Greenhaus College Consulting is a boutique educational consulting business that assists high school students and their families through the college application process. In addition we help parents who are navigating high school choices in middle school as well as serving transfer students, and graduate students. We have a strong focus on the University of California applications since we are based in California. Students and families from all over the country contact us for our unique expertise. Our company differentiates itself by using a multi phase roadmap from exploration to planning, applying and then selecting college options and finally making the transition to college. Since we start with students in their freshman year of high school they may have difficulty seeing the whole picture, this is why we created the Greenhaus Method of Success which follows the students developmental process throughout high school. Once we had a core group of students our success caught on and many referrals followed over the past thirteen years. We are very proud of helping hundreds of students attend college.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
San Diego offers a mix of stunning coastal views and outdoor life. Much of what we do is outdoors including eating and enjoying the parks and ocean views. La Jolla Cove is famous for the views and a great place to enjoy a picnic lunch, swim and just walk on the beautiful beach and enjoy the nearby shops and tourist attractions. If you are an outdoor enthusiast there are several hikes to explore with breathtaking views. Torrey Pines trails is a true favorite among San Diego residents and newcomers.
Coronado Island is known for the historic Hotel del Coronado which is a must for anyone visiting San Diego. The hotel itself is iconic and brings you back in time when visiting the hallways that showcase the events, films and celebrity guests that spent time there back in the 50’s and 60s. There are several fantastic restaurants right that overlook the beach. The area is a hidden gem and not very busy on non holidays. For friends who are visiting from out of town I highly recommend trying the Mexican food and fish tacos in particular. A trip to San Diego would not be complete without a trip to Balboa parks museums. You could visit several in just a day including the Museum of National History, Fleet Science Center, Air and Space museum and the Japanese Friendship Garden. Any time we have family visiting we always take a trip to these areas and guests are highly impressed with atmosphere and of course the beautiful weather.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My parents encouraged my interests by teaching me the value of setting goals and staying committed to something even when things are challenging. They also supported my interests by encouraging creativity and problem solving whether it was through small entrepreneurial activities or thinking broadly. Instead of giving me answers by dad always asked questions that helped me come to my own decisions. Most importantly my dad led by example and I watched him stay dedicated and overcome obstacles time and again. Their support gave me the confidence to take risks and pursue opportunities in business. After earning my Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology I attended college conferences and professional organizations. My new colleagues were very welcoming and encouraging and I found myself feeling at home in my new profession as an independent consultant.
