Meet Yung Mhoon | Rapper

We had the good fortune of connecting with Yung Mhoon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Yung, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’ve always been a pretty creative person I’ve always liked to make art and express myself. When I started college I was an art major and that’s when I decided to become a rapper. When I was in high school I was in a reggae band for a little while they just asked me to be the lead singer cause I had dreads at the time but it was a good experience. We never really made any of our own songs we just did covers. A lot happened over the years, I got pregnant at just 16 and was going in and out of school. Later when my life was more stable around 2019 I started thinking about becoming a rapper and it was just calling me. I had a psychedelic experience at a $uicideBoy$ concert and it really made me realize I wanted to be up there on stage turning up the crowd and spreading more light into the rap industry. I felt a calling and I answered it, at the end of 2019 I started networking with more people and meeting some underground rappers which inspired me to start. We would record wherever we could usually in the homie’s room or something. Shortly after I formed connections with more underground rappers who helped me find my way in the industry and strengthen my brand image. Now in 2025 I’ve dropped two albums, an EP, and probably like 10 singles with another one dropping soon. During this time I’ve also graduated college, had another son, and started a brand called The Sd Tripperz @sdtripperz. My name Yung Mhoon comes from a childhood nickname, I spell it “Mhoon”, because it has moon in it which is my ruling planet as a cancer sun sign and the hoo reminds me of owls which I feel a deep resonance and connection with as my ancestors come and visit in the form of owls sometimes. I appreciate my uniqueness, I stand out in this industry because I’m different, I like to speak on spirituality and ancient practices, a lot of people have forgotten or just haven’t learned about yet. I also try and connect with the main stream as well. I just wanna plant seeds in people’s brains so we can evolve into our higher selves. I love nature and plant medicine they help connect me to the creator and they’ve been a big factor in my inspirations and my style.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I work on music whenever I can, but I also have a full-time job, a part-time job, and I’m a full-time mom. I graduated college last year with my Bachelors Degree in Business Administration at SDSU and my Associates Degree in Business at Mesa College a couple years before which really helped me grow as a person. Plus I never thought I would go to college but I wanted to make my family proud, thank ya’ll for all the support throughout that journey. Right now I work at a Smoke Shop called Payless Smoke Shop on El Cajon Blvd. It is a pretty laid-back job while I’m there I also work on my music, I edit my music videos sometimes and recently I just made some investments into a camera and videography gear so I can start shooting my own videos and doing my own photo shoots, which I low-key already been doing. I work at the college I graduated from SDSU, part-time doing Concessions. In the past I’ve made hula hoops, tie-dye, you name it, I’m a hustler I follow my inspirations and make whatever I can to sell and monetize. I work hard to provide for myself and my kids and I take pride in that. With my most recent brand, “Sd Tripperz” , @sdtripperz I was able to create a brand for people who believe in psychedelic medicine healing and spread awareness to that cause, as well as spreading caution about things like fentanyl which have taken the lives of many people I know that at a young age. I enjoy making trippy designs and working with this artist named Saturn @artaboveeverything he made the main logo for my brand and he has made very cool cover art for me in the past, one in particular is the “Wonderland,” song cover which is one of my favorite songs that I made with Hazard Mouth @hazardmouth. Some people wonder how I do it all and I don’t even know sometimes I get overwhelmed and I stress out, but that’s normal we’re all human and we’re all going through our own challenges in order to make our lives what we want it to be. I have big goals I want to become very wealthy so I can give back to the world and to my children and their children and their children. Sometimes music feels like an uphill battle with not much rewards because there is so much money, time, and effort going into something that you’re not seeing the results from right away, but I have to believe I am opening as many doors as I can to success, I am trusting the process and in God. Music has been a very healing creative outlet for me and I have no regrets in joining this game.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In the past when I’ve had people come from out of town one of the first places I go to is Sunset Cliffs because it’s so iconic there’s something so beautiful about that location and just being able to chill up on the cliffs. I also would take them to Janet’s Café in Alpine, I love the San Diego mountains and I grew up in East County so I have a lot of love for that area. We would need to go on a hike away from the city up in the mountains where the greenery is and there’s little streams of water coming down from the mountains feeding all the plants and trees. We would visit some beaches too, Mission bay is a great time, and Del Mar is my favorite beach! I would definitely take them downtown I love going to the top of the Hyatt it’s so beautiful up there and it’s a great place to show everyone the whole city. If they were gonna go to a concert the Shell on the bay is one of the best venues I’ve ever been to, manifesting I can perform there one day! Also the big outdoor amphitheater in Chula Vista, I’ve had some of the best times of my life there when I was growing up. Mount Helix has always been a healing spot for me as well as Mount Miguel. I love San Diego and I’m really proud to be from here, I am grateful to represent this city. Some great attractions we have here are, SeaWorld , the Zoo / Safari Park, and Legoland. I feel very blessed to have been born and raised in San Diego.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
