We had the good fortune of connecting with Sydney Spence and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sydney, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Regarding my work life balance, it has changed dramatically within just the last five years. My outlook on work has always been to put my head down and grind. Where as now I believe in a healthy balance. I have always been a person to challenge myself, and before I’d allow myself to endure unhealthy challenges. With time I have found that there is such thing as healthy challenges versus unhealthy challenges. Sometimes too much of a good thing can turn into a bad thing, and ultimately we are the deciders of what is truly propelling us to our goals and what is actually doing the opposite for us.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have always been a deeply creative person since the day I was born. Throughout my school years, I found myself drawn to every form of art, never settling on just one area. In college, I knew I wanted to pursue a career that I was truly passionate about, which is when I turned my attention to interior design. Growing up, my parents were always flipping and remodeling the homes I lived in, and that’s where my passion first started.

I attended San Diego State University, balancing life as a Division I athlete on the women’s water polo team while working towards my bachelor’s degree in interior architecture. Juggling these two passions was challenging, but it was incredibly rewarding because I loved both. Art became my mental escape from the life of a student-athlete, while interior design pushed me to think both creatively and functionally.

I’m most proud of earning my degree and securing a job right out of college that allows me to express my creativity so early in my career. I found my post-graduate position through LinkedIn just a few months after graduating. Although I wasn’t sure what to expect at first, I’m now proud to say that I’ve had the opportunity to design properties from start to finish.

I got to where I am today because I believe in endless possibilities, and my confidence comes from the foundation of support provided by my family and my faith. I don’t believe anything worth achieving comes easily. It should feel right and comfortable, but the path to get there often comes with challenges. These are the lessons I’ve learned along the way, and I continue to learn more every day about my career and what it means to be a professional as a young adult.

I want the world to understand that there’s no limit to what you can achieve in life. When you truly believe in your ability to succeed, you’ll start taking small actions toward your dreams. There is no secret formula to achieving your goals—just time, effort, and perseverance.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Growing up in San Diego, I have so many places to show my friend for an amazing time.

I grew up in Northern San Diego, where I could take them to the best Mexican food and beautiful beaches like Carlsbad and Encinitas. We could spend the day at the beach, grab tacos or ice cream afterward, and then catch a sunset.

There are also plenty of other fun activities, like Liberty Station, Balboa Park, or even checking out the zoo for a day.

I’d also take them to some of my favorite local restaurants, like Ciaos for italian food, The Shack for mediterranean, and we’d definitely have to make some time for poke! San Diego is definitely a foodie city.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family deserves an immense amount of credit for the support that they have given me throughout college and sports for me to be where I am today.
