We had the good fortune of connecting with Diana Davidson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Diana, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind the success of Songbirds Music is the deeply personal and relational approach that I take towards catering to families with young children. Every class is designed to build connections and foster relationships, not only with music but also between children, parents, caregivers, and teachers. Songbirds Music is all about families making music together – Moms, Dads, siblings, grandparents, aunts/uncles and nannies are essential to our community. Babies and Toddlers are our jam! Coming to music class is something that parents don’t have to wait for their child to be “old enough” to do – our youngest student to date was 5 days old!

As a parent myself, I know how exciting, exhausting, challenging, and lonely parenting can be. I want my families to feel comfortable and welcome at Songbirds Music whether they are a first-time parent with an infant, a returning family with a toddler and a new baby, or a family who is looking for something to do with their child that they don’t have to plan or clean up after. Parenting and parenthood is hard! Songbirds Music is a place where parents can say “yes” to their children and where they can add a little bit of joy and structure to their week.

When you walk into the studio, there’s a nurturing atmosphere – the teachers knows your name, the studio is the right amount of spacious and cozy, and the natural light shining in creates a warm and inviting atmosphere that feels like a home away from home. The studio space and each class is carefully crafted to be developmentally appropriate, ensuring that each child’s individual needs and growth are at the forefront of the learning process while being engaging, interactive, safe, and enjoyable for every participant.

Songbirds Music is more than just a music class; it is a place where lifelong friendships and memories are created. My hands-on, personalized, community-conscious approach is what truly sets Songbirds Music apart and continues to drive its success for the past sixteen years!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Songbirds Music is a unique and high-quality music program, offering classes in both English and Spanish, set apart by a personal touch that values every family and every child that walks into our space.

What excites me the most is the loyalty and joy we see from families who return session after session. Parents meet lifelong friends, witness their child’s first steps in our classes, hear their child’s first words, or simply share what a difference our classes, the music, and this community has made in their lives. I am proud that we are part of our clients story and that those stories are bright spots in their lives.

My background is in bilingual education. I taught in immersion school for nearly 12 years. I always had music playing in my classroom and incorporated dance and movement to my classroom lesson. It was in those moments of sharing music and movement that the students in my class were most connected. So, after having my first child and moving back to San Diego from the Washington D.C. area, I decided to open Songbirds Music.

Navigating the business landscape, especially amidst the evolution of social media, a global pandemic, and the daily challenges of parenthood and being a small business owner demanded constant adaptability and resilience. At first, the learning curve was steep, but with a network of support from family, friends, other small business owners, and business coaches, I’ve leaned into the power of community and the strength in asking for help.

I want the world to know that Songbirds Music comes from a deep place of love and respect for children and their sense of awe, wonder, and pure joy. Music connect us, contains our memories, cheers us up, and calms us down. You are never too young or too old for music. While music is on the surface of what I do, play, connection, and building relationships is the heartbeat of my company.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
San Diego is such a beautiful city with so many great places to visit, eat, and hang out.. I would start with a visit to Liberty Station where there is something for everyone! The open green space is so relaxing. You can pack a picnic and watch the airplanes, check out the art pieces, galleries, and museums all around, and check out delicious places to eat like The Public Market, Con Pane, Buona Forchetta, and Stone Brewery. You can take dance classes, art classes, catch a movie at The Lot, or watch a concert or a show from the various dance, music, and theater companies or go shopping at Sea Hive, Joyride Books, or sip some tea at Point Loma Tea.

Balboa Park along with the World Famous San Diego Zoo cannot be missed. The museums, historic sites, and the architecture are beautiful! It’s a great place to snap some gorgeous photos. Be prepared to spend the whole day at the zoo; the night time zoo experience is also super fun!

The tide pools at La Jolla Shores and Sunset Cliffs during low tide is super fun! If you are at La Jolla Shores, grab a bite at Carolines or The Cheese Shop and then take a walk to the tide pools -you might see an octopus, sea stars, crabs, and fish. Plus, walking along the boardwalk and checkout the surfers is always cool!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my husband Aron, my parents, and my two songbirds, Hannah, and Bela! Without their continued love, support, encouragement, and advice I would never be where I am today. I do what I love and I love what I do and could not sing, dance, play, and grow without their unwavering support.
