We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Lisa Kavanagh and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michael Lisa, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I was recently faced with huge risk, I had 3 months left on my lease, my landlord raised our rent 81%. I had to decide if I wanted to take the risk of investing the money and time into finding a new space and doing a full build out, there was no guarantee my stylists will follow, it typically gives most stylists the opportunity to leave. All of my stylists came with me, I was able to add chairs to our salon and grow our team to most amazing group of hard-working, supportive women. As we approach our 1-year anniversary of our new location its incredible to see how this risk has paid off.

What should our readers know about your business?
I own Salon MK, my mission is to create a space where people can feel warm and welcomed while receiving a luxury service or a simple bang trim. I’ve worked at salons in the past where I’ve had people say they felt uncomfortable, or they didn’t fit in. One of the best compliments I receive from guests is that the salon has great energy and they feel so relaxed when they are there. I have grown a lot in the past 10 years of owning my business, there are definitely things I would have done differently in the beginning, but those things have helped me grow to the business owner I am today. I wish I would have understood the importance of taking business classes earlier on, that has really helped me the most. Understanding that when stylist leave its not personal, it always hurts a little, but I truly am happy to see them succeed and feels great to know I was apart of their journey. I am so proud to have a salon where clients can have an amazing experience while feeling welcomed and stylist know I am their biggest supporter, nothing makes me happier than seeing them succeed.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I have so many favorites, I would start with brunch at toast, then head over to Marshall Stuart wine tasting room located at vail ranch headquarters. If you’re still hungry you can order food from grazing theory located next door, they have the most amazing meats and cheese. I would spend a whole day at Murrieta hot springs resort, that’s my absolute favorite way to relax.
If you’re in the mood for some fine dining and crafted cocktails I would head to the corbeaux room in Old town Temecula.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My Family, my team of stylists, especially my manager Jordan. Going through an incredibly stressful buildout and having to it in 3 months wouldn’t have been possible without their support. Had my stylists not said they all wanted to come with me to a new location, I would have most likely closed up shop. It takes a village and without all their love and support I would be on a very different path right now. At the time my kids were 10 months and 4 years old, my family all pitched to help make sure they were taken care of while I was working on getting the buildout done.
