We had the good fortune of connecting with Joaquin Hernandez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joaquin, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Taking risks is essential in the music industry. As Cumbia Machin, I embraced a significant challenge by attempting to perform again with a new instrument called the Zendrum. Discovering the Zendrum allowed me to play despite my neurological condition, focal dystonia.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I want to share the challenges I’ve faced with this genetic neurological disorder. I was a drummer for many years, playing in various local San Diego bands and exploring styles like salsa, jazz, funk, reggae, and punk rock. During a recording session, I suddenly lost the ability to hold a drumstick properly. It took years to figure out what was happening before I was finally diagnosed with focal dystonia.

Then I discovered the Zendrum, which allows me to play electronic drums with my fingers since I can no longer hold a drumstick. The biggest challenge was reinventing myself and my music so I could continue creating. I hope my journey inspires others to overcome their own challenges in life.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I were to recommend one place for friends and fans to visit in San Diego, it would definitely be Barrio Logan. Located just south of downtown, this vibrant neighborhood is steeped in Chicano art and music culture. It’s home to the historic Chicano Park, as well as numerous local art galleries, restaurants, music venues, and lively street festivals.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shoutout to all the old-school jazz musicians from the San Diego community who have inspired me from the very beginning.
