We had the good fortune of connecting with Andrea Yorita and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Andrea, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
The older I’ve gotten, having a life outside of my career has become increasingly important. Without those other sides of me I would become one dimensional. If I don’t experience life with all the ups and downs then how can I grow?

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I danced professionally for a contemporary ballet company for 11 years. While being in the company was such a highlight of my life, I realized that I didn’t know who I was as an individual. I was a version of myself that was filtered through being attached to the company; always trying to please everyone whether it be my directors, the choreographers, my co-workers, or even the audience. I felt that because I am a natural introvert, my voice didn’t mean as much as the larger personalities in the room. Once I left the company I began my own dance project called The Sonder Space in Philadelphia with two other colleagues, Zachary Kapeluck and Blake Krapels. Stepping into a leadership role has shown me that my voice is important and that I do have my own thoughts, opinions and creativity. With this new dance project, I want to let every artist’s voice be heard. I also would like to connect other art genres with dance. I love learning about other people’s stories and finding connections.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My ballet teacher growing up, Merle Sepel. No matter what, she always believed in me. Also, of course, my family who have always been a source of grounding and the definition of unconditional love.
