Rolling the dice: conversations on risk

Taking Risk is essential, but how much, when and why? Taking risks effectively is as much of an art as it is a science and we’ve asked some of the brightest folks in the community to tell us about how they think about risk taking.

Risk-taking has been an integral part of my life and career, shaping both my personal growth and professional trajectory. I view risk as an essential component of progress and innovation. Without stepping out of one’s comfort zone, it’s challenging to achieve meaningful growth or seize new opportunities. In my career, taking risks has often meant making bold decisions, such as transitioning from a stable role in the radiology field to a completely different industry—utilities. When we first started our business in 2018, we were 28 years old and had been planning towards opening up our shop for years at that point. Neither of us had been to business school, and although we did skim a few books, it was mostly determination that got us here. We knew it was risky, but we were so excited that we didn’t focus on that. We bet on ourselves and believed that with hard-work we would succeed. I am (perhaps abnormally) risk-tolerant; I have always been wired as a risk taker, riding my bike full-speed in the woods as a kid, doing every dare that my friends could think of. Testing the boundaries of what is possible and making magic happen involves taking risk. I believe that my life has been greatly enhanced by my acceptance of risk. Many people may point to how my approach to risk has almost cost me my life, and my savings on multiple occasions, but to me, I wouldn’t be who I am had I not been transformed by experiencing of over 70 countries, living off grid with nomads, having fallen in love, or invested in things no one believed in.
