Meet Sadie Bowler | Co-founder and CEO

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sadie Bowler and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sadie, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Styling hair has been a passion of mine for a long time. Being immersed in the beauty industry at such a young age made it clear that messages telling me that I needed to look a certain way to be considered “good enough” was taking a toll on my mental health. I have struggled with anxiety like so many girls my age and recognizing the need to focus on my personal development has changed everything for me.
When I was formulating the products I focused on function. After using and studying products over the last decade, I was able to formulate a product in a way that served my needs as an adventurer and in other areas of my life. Our four functional product lines that focus on girls’ lifestyles include The Athlete, Adventurer, Creator, and Go-Getter.
The Surgeon General has called the youth mental health crisis “the defining public health crisis of our time.” Abby and I have faced our own mental health struggles and see our friends suffering as well. This cause is something that we are personally invested in. We believe that mental hygiene goes hand in hand with personal care hygiene. It is a daily practice.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
In May 2022, my sister Abby and I launched the DTC site for our company, SadieB Personal Care. We launched with sixteen products — four lines of shampoo, conditioner, body wash and body spray — that are built around girls’ activities and interests. These four lines of salon-quality, earth-friendly products are titled the Go-Getter, Athlete, Creator and Adventurer. Through these product lines, SadieB speaks authentically to girls about their interests and highlights their incredible potential rather than reinforcing the harmful yet prevalent message that a girl’s looks determine her value. One of the most rewarding parts of building SadieB has been witnessing girls connect and see themselves in the SadieB brand. They have an experience where they are choosing products based on who they are, not just what they think they need to fix about their appearance. We’ve also seen moms fall in love with the message and share it with their daughters, often saying something like “I wish I had this brand when I was younger!”
In an effort to truly empower girls to care for their whole selves, body and mind, we couple our innovative product approach at SadieB with a mental hygiene message, encouraging the daily practice of caring for one’s mental health. A certified therapist on our team, Sam Dalton, certifies our mental health content and assists in promoting mental hygiene tips and resources across all SadieB channels. We send affirmation cards in our orders, send a weekly mental hygiene text to our sms subscribers and partner with organizations that support girls’ mental health. Our first non-profit partner was Girl Up United Nations Foundation and we just recently partnered with Huntsman Mental Health Foundation to sponsor a program implementing mental health clinics into local high schools. Making a meaningful impact for good is crucial to us at SadieB and is a key to our company’s purpose.
Since launching our website in 2022, we have launched our shampoos and conditioners into 500+ Target stores nationwide and on Target.com. This is a dream come true and definitely an opportunity that came much sooner than we anticipated. We know we couldn’t have made it this far without incredible mentors, including our father Chris Bowler who is an entrepreneur himself, Davis Smith, founder of Cotopaxi, McKenzie Bauer, founder of Thread, and many more. The support I have received as a student at the University of Utah from the Lassonde Institute has also been crucial to our success. We also owe our success so far to the power and truth in the SadieB message, which is that girls do not need to “fix” their appearance or fit a certain mold before they step out into the world and accomplish incredible things. We are committed to using our platform to provide personal care and mental hygiene resources to empower girls to care for their whole selves and achieve their dreams.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We live in Salt Lake City, Utah! Our favorite part about living in Utah is the easy access to the mountains where we can hike, trail run, kayak, camp, ski in the winter and generally enjoy the incredible outdoors. If someone were to spend a week in Utah, we’d recommend splitting it between northern and southern Utah. In northern Utah you can spend time downtown which has City Creek mall and many great places to eat, including Chile-Tepin, our favorite Mexican restaurant. Downtown SLC isn’t too far from Park City which has fun shopping on main street and some other incredible restaurants. A couple hours in the car from SLC, you can see the Uinta mountain range which is arguably the most untouched wilderness in Utah. In southern Utah, you can visit Zions National Park, or Moab, which are both stunning places to hike and camp. The red rock formations are unlike anything else you can find in the US!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Our dad, Chris Bowler. He is our mentor and biggest supporter.
