Meet April Laster | CEO & Founder of Open Heart Leaders & Executive Director of Heart Leaders Academy Charter High School

We had the good fortune of connecting with April Laster and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi April, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
The most profound lesson my career has imparted upon me is the realization that if I want things accomplished, I must take the reins myself. As a black woman navigating the realms of behavioral health and education, I’ve learned that the path to recognition demands ten times the effort of my counterparts. I’ve come to understand that to merely be considered on par with others, I must stay twenty steps ahead, tirelessly proving my worth. Yet, amidst my achievements, I’ve often found myself standing solo, a testament to the solitary nature of my journey.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Our business is more than just a service provider; it’s a beacon of empowerment and change in the field of behavioral health and education. What sets us apart is our unwavering dedication to excellence and our deep-rooted commitment to the communities we serve. We prioritize innovation, tailoring our programs to meet the unique needs of individuals, families, and organizations.
What I’m most proud of is the impact we’ve had on countless lives. Seeing individuals flourish and thrive under our guidance is truly gratifying. I’m also excited about the potential for further growth and expansion, allowing us to reach even more people in need.
Getting to where we are today hasn’t been easy. As a black woman in a predominantly male and white-dominated industry, I’ve faced numerous challenges. However, I’ve overcome these obstacles through perseverance, resilience, and the invaluable support of mentors and allies.
Along the way, I’ve learned the importance of staying true to my vision and values, even in the face of adversity. Building a successful business requires determination, adaptability, and a willingness to learn from both successes and setbacks.
Our story is one of resilience, empowerment, and community. We want the world to know that we are more than just a business; we are agents of change, dedicated to making a positive impact on the lives of others. By embracing diversity, championing inclusion, and fostering collaboration, we strive to create a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
During my best friend’s week-long visit to sunny San Diego, I’d ensure they experience the city’s vibrant culture, delicious cuisine, and breathtaking scenery. We’d start our adventure with breakfast at The Maple before exploring the scenic La Jolla Cove and indulging in Garlic Wings at OB Noodle House. The following day, we’d hike Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, refueling with fried chicken sandwiches at The Crack Shack and exploring the Gaslamp Quarter’s historic charm. Our itinerary would also include visits to Balboa Park’s museums, the San Diego Zoo, and the USS Midway Museum. We’d dine at renowned eateries like Juniper & Ivy, Cucina Urbana, and Herb & Wood, savoring diverse cuisines in unique settings. Days would be spent lounging at Mission Beach, strolling through Little Italy and Coronado, and exploring neighborhoods i grew up in like North Park and Barrio Logan. We’d end our week with brunch at Breakfast Republic and a final dinner at Louisiana Purchase, ensuring a memorable send-off from America’s Finest City.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
A heartfelt shoutout to all those who rely on my unwavering commitment, and to the individuals in need of the vital programs and services we provide. I also extend my deepest gratitude to the remarkable black women who have paved the way before me, mentoring and nurturing me to endure the trials inherent in striving for greatness. Your guidance and support fuel my resilience, propelling me forward on this journey.
