We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashanti Miranda and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ashanti, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
I envision my legacy as a reflection of the diverse roles I’ve embraced and the lives I’ve impacted. As the founder of “Uncommon Coaching,” I’ve dedicated myself to guiding individuals towards realizing their full potential and leading more fulfilling lives. My non-profit organization, “Veterans of Hope,” stands as a testament to my commitment to supporting those struggling with mental health, drawing on my own experiences post-military service. My four years in the USN endowed me with invaluable leadership skills, an appreciation for diversity, and the ability to manage crises effectively—skills that have been instrumental in my work as a clinical social worker and therapist. My academic pursuits, from Point Loma Nazarene to a graduate degree in social work from USC, have not only fueled my personal growth but also enabled me to share my knowledge and inspire others. I want to be remembered as someone who, through perseverance and a deep sense of community, has helped hundreds chart a course to a more hopeful and empowered future.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What sets my business apart is the unique blend of military discipline and the compassionate understanding of a social worker. I take pride in my ability to connect with individuals from all walks of life, helping them navigate their challenges and achieve personal growth.

The journey here wasn’t easy. Transitioning from military life, I faced my own mental health struggles, which fueled my passion for helping others. Overcoming these challenges required the same perseverance and teamwork that I learned in the Navy. I went back to school, earned my graduate degree, and used my education to further my mission of empowering others.

The lessons I’ve learned are invaluable: resilience in the face of adversity, the importance of community, and the transformative power of hope. I want the world to know that “Uncommon Coaching” isn’t just about overcoming obstacles; it’s about building a life of fulfillment and purpose. My story is one of triumph over trials, and through my brand, I aim to inspire others to write their own stories of success.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Imagine my best friend is coming to San Diego for a visit. I’d want to show them the very heart of this dynamic city, so I’d put together a week-long itinerary filled with unforgettable experiences.

We’d kick off the week with Day 1 at Balboa Park, where a morning walk would reveal enchanting gardens and striking Spanish architecture. We’d wander through some of the park’s 17 museums, perhaps stopping by the San Diego Museum of Art or the Museum of Natural History.

Day 2 would be dedicated to the San Diego Zoo, renowned worldwide for its vast collection of animals and conservation efforts.

On Day 3, we’d take it easy, soaking up the sun at one of the city’s beautiful beaches, like La Jolla Cove or Coronado Beach.

Day 4 would take us on a historical journey through Old Town San Diego, offering a glimpse into the city’s past. As night falls, we’d get a thrill from a ghost tour at the Whaley House Museum.

Day 5 would tantalize our taste buds with San Diego’s rich culinary offerings, featuring a prime steak dinner at Lou & Mickey’s or fresh seafood at Island Prime.

The city’s energetic nightlife would be our focus on Day 6, starting with a cocktail at Raised by Wolves before dancing the night away in the Gaslamp Quarter.

To conclude our week on Day 7, we’d enjoy a leisurely brunch and then either visit the serene Japanese Friendship Garden or take a relaxing harbor cruise.

Throughout the week, we’d also dive into local culture, attending events, browsing farmers’ markets, and enjoying street fairs to fully embrace the San Diego lifestyle. It’s a city with something for everyone, from its sunny beaches to its bustling downtown.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to dedicate my shoutout to Joshua Washington, whose positive influence radiates through his encouragement of self-education and creative expression. His passion for reading ignites a love for learning in others, while his dedication to dance inspires a wave of creativity. Joshua’s impact is a testament to the power of nurturing talents and sharing knowledge.

And to Darreca Leftridge, a serial entrepreneur whose vision extends beyond her own success. She stands as a beacon for other entrepreneurs, especially black women, creating a community of empowerment and unity. Her efforts to uplift others pave the way for a future where collaboration and support are the cornerstones of success.

Their stories remind us that behind every achievement, there are often unsung heroes who deserve our gratitude and recognition.
