Artists & creatives on why they pursued a creative career

Artistic and creative careers are among the most rewarding, but they also come with unique challenges. We asked some of the city’s best creatives to tell us why they choose to pursue a creative career.

Because it’s how I keep sane. At first it was simply for the fun of it; I enjoyed playing instruments, writing songs, jamming with friends, and getting to do it in front of other people was a thrill. But as time went by and my songwriting improved, I found that music was the best thing I had that allowed me to release every pent up emotion I was feeling. Writing about topics that are very deep and close to my heart, and getting to perform them in front of audiences allowed me to release those emotions in a healthy way. Not everyone has an outlet like that, and I see it get the better of a lot of people when they have no choice but to bottle everything up inside. Music was there for me when I needed it most. In society we have always acknowledged noble jobs especially when regarding status. From those who are considered Royalty to modern day nobles like lawyers, doctors, etc. – my point is, even those people have their favorite artists. You may be someone’s favorite. If you have an artistic expression I believe it is best to put it all out for the world to accept and critique. People pushed me into my creativity because I had no fear of expressing myself. I am a dreamer since birth. We can blame that on my zodiac sign of Pisces 😉 I always knew I was meant to perform in any capacity. I was singing since the young age of 2 and grew up in a very musical family. I saw how beautiful a creative impact can be on your life and changing other people’s lives. I believe the main reason I decided to pursue art is because it has always brought me so much joy. Since childhood, I’ve loved doodling in the corners of my notebooks, coloring, and crafting handmade cards for my loved ones. I have such fond memories of drawing comics about my friends and family, always trying to capture the funny moments we shared. Read more>>

I thought about what brought me joy in my life. It dawned on me that I loved to watch television and especially old black and white movies. As a freshman in high school a TV show that I loved was cancelled. I started a petition to get it back; other kids thought I was crazy. Needless to say that didn’t work out. Yet, it demontrated to me and others that I had a passion film/TV. I went on to major in film in college hoping to expand my creative career.
