Meet Joani DiCampli | Creator and Owner of Boobalicious Body Hygiene Products

We had the good fortune of connecting with Joani DiCampli and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joani, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When I first came up with the idea to start my business I did not even know where to begin and the thought process of this to me was I was in the unknown on how to even begin to start a product line let alone how to even get started.
So I did what I thought was the right step to take was to go on Google and learn on the process of making the formula for my deodorant, where to go to order material and products. I started to write things down, learn as much as I could from the internet and started to understand little by little.
I was so intrigued on how much I learned in a short time on how to start the process and to just go with it step by step from articles, You Tube and social media.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I became an entrepreneur at the age of 46 by mistake and what I mean is that as a middle age woman I was laid off from my corporate job and had no idea how to reinvent myself or let alone start a business.
This is how it happened: I was working at a boutique part time and waiting on customers one hot summer night in 2012. I noticed I had this awful boob sweat and I was mortified in that moment, not to mention a smell coming from between my breast (ewh). I turned to my co-worker in that moment and said there should be an all-natural breast deodorant and I am going to create one and call it Boobalicious.
When I went to work, I would interview all the women that came in and asked if they would wear an all-natural deodorant and a majority said they would. I talked about Boobalicous for months until my husband said stop talking about it and just do it!!!
I ran upstairs after he said that I started doing research on how to make natural deodorant. A few days later I received a letter from my stepmom with a check for $75 dollars and it said if you don’t try you will never know. I knew it was destiny for me to create my brand Boobalicious.
It has been a journey of triumph, failure, success, helplessness and rewarding all through the 8 years I have been building my brand. Here I would like to share part of my journey with you as my journey is continuing.
When I first started creating Boobalicious from just an idea I had no idea on how? So, I went to Google and did a lot of research on how to create a formula, how to trademark my name, how to do labels, etc. so much to learn which I had no idea how hard this journey is but at the same time so rewarding.
Once I had my formula, name and labels I was ready to sell Boobalicious and I put up on Etsy and to my surprise I started selling within 24hours and withing a year Boobalciisou was being recognized by Allure Beauty, Cosmo, Refinery 29 and many blogs. I was so excited to be getting all this reorganization and, in my mind, thought I am ready for this but, I was not as I have 3 children and 2 of them were suffering from addiction and one also had mental illness. As I go back, I remember working full time, taking care of a family, working on my business at night and trying to help my children.
As my journey continues, I have made a few mistakes on my journey that I hope can help you someday if you decide to become an entrepreneur.
There is quite a few but my two big ones are what I really want to share with you as it can cost you a lot of money.
The first was not believing in myself and that I could do all of this on my own so a friend I met networking called me up one night and said my brand will be a million-dollar brand and with his expertise he could help me. Of course, in that moment I was so excited, so I said yes. But wait he wanted 20 percent for his time with no money invested and I agreed??? I had that much self-doubt that I put everything I worked for in someone else’s hand that I only knew for 6 months.
A year has gone by with this partner and as I invested in myself and started networking, I started to see red flags and question this to him and he kept under minded me and I did not know how to handle. I finally told him I would like to go separate ways and he said OK for $100,000.00 to get my 20 percent back. I was beside myself and did not know what to do. As Lawyers are not affordable currently and after lying in bed after a week I decide to get up and fight. At the end of the day, I gave him a much lower price and I did get my 20 percent back.
Another one right after this mistake I took on a manufacture as it was woman owned and she was the underdog like myself and wanted to give her the opportunity. This was a terrible mistake as she filled the containers halfway and told me my customers would not know but I knew and had to sell those at half price. It gets better she took my formula and is selling breast deodorant private label.
I could really get mad at this, but I chose to forgive and move on and pivot on these challenges. I changed my formula to vegan, I started believing in myself and that I do have a great product and I can do it!!!
I have learned so many lessons through this journey, but the best part is all the women I have met have empowered me to be the best version of myself and that is one of the greatest gifts I have received during this journey.
I hope my brand and story can encourage others and know you can do what ever you. put your mind to and don’t let anyone tell you different. I almost did not do Boobalicious as everyone laughed at the Idea and Boobalicious was the first breast and body stick on the market and now today there are so many out there that you can pick form but to me all brands pretty much work the same it is the person behind the brand that you buy from.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in Rehoboth Beach and such a nice town that I would take them to the beach, take them shopping on the avenue by the beach so many fun and great boutique and along the way stop at one of the amazing restaurants we have here.
Then we can take the Ferry over to Cape May New Jersey and go to the Cape May Zoo (my friends love animals 🙂 ). So many things to do when you live in a beach town and so grateful I get to live by the beach.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First my shout out goes to my husband who stop me in my tracks and said stop listening to people around you telling you this will never work – JUST DO IT!!
My First mentor I stumbled upon on Instagram when I was building my brand was Grant Cardone, who I would listen to almost on a nightly basis while I was working in my office and the first words and advise that really stuck to me was you have to invest in yourself. He gave so many tips and golden nuggets and I started to apply those to my own business on how to network, posting, etc.
I took those words to heart and started investing in my self and my first event was taking a trip to Florida to learn how to pitch with Forbes Riley and it was amazing! From there I went to 10X Conference to see Grant & Elana Cardone and all their amazing guest. One of their guess was Daneille Dagado and I was so intrigued with her story and joined Win on Repeat.
Then Cindy Eckert who is another amazing woman who I look up to and how she took time out of her busy schedule to get on a phone call with me to give me advise and tips on moving forward with my business.
I admire all of them and how much they have impacted my life and business.
