Meet Lety Castillo | Music Therapist & Founder of O.C. Music Services

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lety Castillo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lety, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always been a planner and thoroughly enjoy the process of initiating new projects. I also have a desire for creative expression and found myself constantly daydreaming and brainstorming business ideas in my head. Most of these ideas were small, like freelancing around the community or selling my crafts. I like to stay busy so this process was mostly to keep me occupied and create learning opportunities for myself.
After years of small ventures, I finally had the opportunity to branch out professionally and create my music therapy and music lesson practice, O.C. Music Services. From the beginning there have been challenges and rewards with building something from the ground up, but the results have been invigorating and fulfilling.
The business thought process is still ongoing, even after almost 2 years in business I find myself still in the “process” phase from streamlining organization and procedures to expanding and hiring our first employee.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My work as a music therapist has been profoundly fulfilling. I’ve had the privilege of working primarily with autistic students and older adults in memory care. Music therapy, often unfamiliar to many, holds a unique power. It has the potential to transform lives, whether in a group setting or one-on-one. My training as a music therapist enables me to tailor sessions to meet my clients’ individual needs, helping them progress towards their personalized goals.
My professional journey has been marked by growth and self-belief. I’ve learned to trust in my abilities and embrace the courage to explore new opportunities. There have been challenges but I have learned to meet them head-on. When faced with tough moments, I focus on one task at a time, constantly reminding myself of my capability. I have learned to become my own biggest cheerleader and motivational speaker!
O.C. Music Services is a reflection not only of my journey as a music therapist but also as a person committed to making a meaningful impact. My aspiration for this organization is to offer unlimited support to individuals of all abilities. O.C.M.S. values strong community and equal opportunities for all. Our lives are enriched by music. Music is powerful, it possesses unparalleled strength – it has the power to change lives and foster deeper connections, both within ourselves and with others.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I actually just had 2 out-of-town visitors this past month so I can share what we did!
Typically, I like to see what sort of activities they are interested in. Orange County is wonderful for having a big variety of nature, entertainment and food. Most times people are interested in going to the beach, so I show them my two favorite spots: San Clemente beach (since I live nearby) and Laguna Beach (specifically Treasure Island Beach). If we are hungry, we will pick up some California Burritos from Lupe’s in Dana Point, and take some beach chairs to enjoy our afternoon in the beach.
My favorite restaurants are Pizzeria Mozza in Newport Beach (order their mozzarella cheese and fresh bread), Ramos House in San Juan Capistrano (order their crab hash and beignets) and of course, In-n-Out right after their flight lands.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to thank my husband, Scott, for his encouragement during this journey. I would also like to thank all the families we serve for supporting my small business and trusting us with their children’s and loved ones’ growth.
