We had the good fortune of connecting with Riot Fox & Tim Mick Raw and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Riot Fox & Tim Mick Raw, what is the most important factor behind your success?
We feel the success of our brand comes from our commitment to our values. We created Fox and Tim Productions as a liberation practice, a radical act of resistance against the systems oppressing trans and queer people. We resist by centering and elevating our siblings most impacted by these systems with a goal of shared economy and a belief that we are abundant as a collective. This looks like paying a high base rate, sharing tips collectively, centering nonwhite and multiply-marginalized performers and crew, asking no one to work for free, offering a platform and promotion to other trans artists and entrepreneurs, and emphasizing messages of revolution, collectivism, and police & prison abolition. We gather trans and gender expansive folks together to share resources, make connections, celebrate trans artists, and put money directly in the pockets of our community.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The most important lesson we learned, the thing that guides us, is community over competition. Drag is an expansive and thriving community and artform that can’t be contained to one genre but it’s common for people to pigeonhole drag as Drag Race and Queen-only shows — spaces where Drag Kings are often left out or given limited representation in one skinny white King. In the past year, there have been quite a few Drag King shows pop up (Casa Cuchi, Revancha, Satrang) but prior to that it was really challenging to find space to produce or perform as a Drag King. We’ve found that what makes us successful is how we support one another in these endeavors and in so, have found more opportunities to take up space and produce our own shows. It’s really common for someone to attend one of our shows that’s never seen a Drag King perform – we consistently receive feedback from these folks that Drag Kings are so creative and talented and entertaining and often it’s the best show they’ve ever attended. We want success and visibility for all these talented Kings, and believe in collaborating with and elevating each other as a community rather than succumbing to the capitalistic belief that we’re competing over the same pie. There is abundance for everyone when we push this art to its creative limits, and we see Kings leading that push.

TIM: For me, no one taught me drag or showed me how or invited me in – I just saw a thing I wanted to do and asked to be a part of it. I’ve been welcomed into this community with open arms, have continued honing my craft, and have had the opportunity to support other new Kings as they enter the scene. Working collectively and in community is paramount to my success.

FOX: Tim is my drag dad and helped me finally take up space as a King after I’d hesitated for years. Other Kings like Provvidenza and Mauro Cuchi gave me my first performance spots. Community has been the most important factor in making me the King I’ve wanted to be and allying with my comrades and other new Kings, rather than competing, is how I pay that forward.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Casa Cuchi – a QTBIPOC centered production founded and created by Drag King, Mauro Cuchi. They supported us in securing our first residency as a production company and are also doing really important work! IG: @casacuchiofficial
