We had the good fortune of connecting with Lashunika Hicks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lashunika, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Over time balancing work life, business, and personal life has been challenging. But I have learned to create systems that will help not to work as much and still be able enjoy my life and those around me. I don’t think I have found a true balance but I have found ways that will allow me to accomplish task while also allowing me to have time for myself and enjoy those close to me at the same time. Starting a business it’s not always explained that you will be wearing multiple hats so the best thing you can do is find ways that will eliminate task that will lead to overly working yourself!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Growing Strong Minds is a tutoring service which supports students in overcoming their reading struggles. I witness children who entered my program lacking reading skills such as not being able to say letter sounds transition to reading short stories. Most recently, I witnessed one of my first graders transition from reading on a beginning kindergarten level to an emerging second grade level. This journey has not been easy but the help of my clients help make things easy and purposeful. Along my business journey I have learned to celebrate small wins along with the big wins. Growing Strong Minds is a tutoring service that strives to make the things that are seen as impossible shift to being possible.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m from Georgia. Every city has their own vibe I am sure that will be loved no matter which direction we turn! If my best friend came for a visit one of our favorite things to do is eat. So we would definitely be on a quest for food. One of my favorite restaurants to visit Krackin’ Up Krab located in Fayetteville,GA. We both love seafood! So I am sure that would be an enjoyable outing. I consider myself a very simple person. I am not big on huge crowds, unless it’s a J.Cole concert! Visiting local parks or simple waterfalls is will do for me.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
If I were to sit and name each person who has impacted my business and life, this would be one long article. But I will give a huge shout out to my God who has made all things possible and placed in places that I never would imagine. I would also dedicate this article to my grandmother who passed away in 2018. She was a beautiful soul and I remember before she passed away she told me that my calling was working with children. If heaven had a phone I would call her up and say “Grandma look at your girl now!
