Meet Corey Senese | Professional Surf Instructor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Corey Senese and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Corey, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I was finishing my degree with goals of becoming a personal trainer or physical therapist when I started teaching people how to surf. The idea came from witnessing an extremely poor surf lesson take place at one of my favorite beaches. I found teaching to be a very satisfying kind of work. As I gained momentum I recruited a few buddies who were both excellent surfers and who I knew would be terrific teachers as well, and we grew our stellar reputation from there.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The biggest factor to our success has been cultivating an excellent reputation as being a group of highly skilled, professional surf instructors who take their job seriously and want nothing more than to see their students improve and have fun. Starting a business is never easy and there will be challenges regardless of how successful you become. Another part of being successful is having an extremely professional person behind the scenes running the show. That person is my partner and wife, Kristin Senese. She is the director and one of the biggest reasons our reputation is as bulletproof as our services. Most people don’t expect to find a polite, organized, responsible person when booking a surf lesson, and that’s what we have. Kristin has been the most crucial part of keeping CoreysWave as strong as it is today. We are great examples of doing what you love for a living. If you have an idea for what you want to do and are unsure about it. Make a plan and go for it. I found that teaching something you love is a great way to find happiness.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well, being a surfer, all I want to show people are my favorite beaches. But besides that, there are a number of coastal drives that are gorgeous. La Jolla is a great place to spend a day or two. The kiddie pools where you can see the seals, the caves at La Jolla coves. Sunset cliffs are beautiful. The Balboa museums and the Birch Aquarium just to name a few attractions. Swamis is my favorite beach both for surf and for hanging out, and where I can always see old friends and family. Must eat as much Mexican food as possible because it’s the best here. There are literally thousands of great restaurants.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to give it to Terry Simms, a good friend and mentor. @terrysimmssurf is a local Californian and excellent surf stoke enhancer. He’s got a really good product he’s been working on. Check him out.
