We had the good fortune of connecting with Eric Hellon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Eric, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
The idea of our business was the result of spending years in the real estate industry, noticing how many potential first time homebuyers wanted to buy a home, but weren’t ready for a number of reasons – low credit, high debt, no savings, etc. The real estate agents and lenders they reached out to didn’t have the time to work with them one-on-one, but we knew all they needed was some guidance and accountability, and they’d be better prepared to buy their first home.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

Homeowner Prep is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that educates and encourages aspiring homeowners to buy and leverage their first home so they can create lasting generational wealth. We are hyper-focused on homeownership because we know owning a home is often the fastest path to true wealth in America. Our clients are primarily young millennials, from disadvantaged financial backgrounds, who are quickly losing hope in the possibility of homeownership. We are most proud of our clients who overcome challenges, whether mental or financial, to keep their focus and accomplish their goal.

I only got to where I am in business because I refused to let pain overshadow my purpose. Every entrepreneur goes through challenges, either with people or profits, and sometimes both at the same time. My journey was no different. Having built a successful career in the real estate business, I learned to manage the frustration of having so many parties involved in the closing of a transaction, and ultimately having an influence in your ability to pay the bills. I have had to learn to save money during good times, understand the seasonality of the real estate market, and jump through the many hoops presented to entrepreneurs looking to buy a home. These times prepared me to help clients facing the same challenges.

I want the world to understand that I am truly focused on helping others reach their goals and find the greatest satisfaction in helping clients change the financial outlook of their future generations. Leaning heavy on my personal faith, I know that my success is the direct result of helping others succeed, and I hope to encourage others to keep their eyes open to opportunities to fix the problems they see in business and in life.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Whenever friends or family visit we have to find our way to the beach, I’ve never had a bad day at the beach. Taking the scenic route, grabbing some great tacos at a small hole-in-the-wall restaurant, that would be a perfect way to start a trip. With more time we would definitely take a drive through some of the most expensive neighborhoods with amazing mansions and views, comparing homes and our own personal real estate dreams. For the night life we would find our way to the Gaslamp District to people watch, enjoy a great meal in Little Italy, and grab some gelato before calling it a night. Being a sports fanatic, I always like to catch either a San Diego State game or Padres game and maybe even take a trip up to Los Angeles to watch a game at the Staples Center. I truly believe Southern California’s greatest assets are our weather and the beauty of the Pacific Ocean, so I would find ways to take advantage of both all week long.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My success as an entrepreneur is the direct result of seeing my father and oldest brother set the example of entrepreneurship. I got a chance to see the ups and downs of being in business, and I found my own lane by placing purpose before profit. Having the support, love, and encouragement of family is not always available to entrepreneurs, so I credit my success to my family because they continued to support me, refer me clients, and remind me to keep going.
