We had the good fortune of connecting with Ian Bateman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ian, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always loved to build things. When I was a kid, it was with Legos or sand castles at the beach. When I got a bit older, it was tiny websites, or DIY projects like model rockets, RC helicopters & quadcopters. Starting my first business in college to serve the local community with an online ordering platform was a natural continuation. Even now with Incoggo, it’s the drive to build that motivates me. Having the opportunity to work on problems I care about and find interesting makes every day a good day. For me, being able to share Incoggo — giving others the ability to control and improve their Internet experience — is the most meaningful thing I could be working on!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Simply, Incoggo (https://incoggo.com) is an ‘Adblocker for Paywalls’. That means we apply normal adblocking technology in a slightly different way so that you never see those annoying “you’ve hit your article limit for the month” popups. We’re by-far the most effective & reliable way to do this kind of adblocking today, and we’re very proud of how smooth the user experience is!
To get to this point (we’re currently available for Mac – and we actually just got #1 on Product Hunt! (https://www.producthunt.com/posts/incoggo)) hasn’t been easy — it’s been months and months of sweat and tears developing the underlying technology. That said, we’ve still a long way to go, and the job’s far from finished (Windows is coming soon!) — we’re psyched to have the opportunity to keep working on Incoggo every day though, it’s been incredible fun so far!
If there’s been one key lesson I’ve learned during my entrepreneurial journey, it’s that the compounding effects of making just a little progress every day can be incredible over time. It’s amazing to see how working to improve 5% every day means that you end up with something twice as good in just 2 weeks! I’ve also found that a lot of times, if I’m struggling with something late in the day, just going to bed and starting again with a fresh mind in the morning magically makes impossible problems solvable.
Looking towards the future, we’re really excited about the platform potential that Incoggo holds — we see Incoggo as a launching point for a new kind of ‘extension-style’ functionality, a way to give users the ability to fully control & modify their Internet experience! We’re encouraging everyone to stay tuned — big things are soon to come from Team Incoggo!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
So many places! I absolutely love surfing, so top of the list would be Malibu, Salt Creek, and Trestles. Maybe a short trip down south to Swami’s and Cardiff would be in order. Stewart’s in San Clemente is my all-time favorite surf shop — the staff is always incredibly friendly and welcoming. For eats, we’d definitely have to hit up Surfin Donuts for breakfast, then maybe up to Nick’s in Laguna for lunch or dinner! At some point we’d have to do Duke’s, and maybe have a nice evening at Moonshadows. For a change of pace, I’m always partial to a trip to Universal!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Above everyone, I have to first shoutout my parents. Without their hard work, sacrifice, and support I never would have had the solid education, foundation, and confidence I needed to make the leap into being a full time entrepreneur. I appreciate them a lot more than I think they realize!
I also have to shoutout to my friends and mentors (and especially my girlfriend) who have helped me along so far — their willingness to ping-pong ideas with me, to share & test early versions of the product, and to lend support through the tough days has made this all so much easier than it ever would have been otherwise!
Last but not least, I have to shoutout my incredible cofounder Marianne Cruzat! The boundless energy and unstoppable enthusiasm she brings every day has made working on Incoggo a joy!
