We had the good fortune of connecting with Brutha Eli and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brutha, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind any success I have had or will have is passion. If you aren’t passionate about what it is you do, or the vision you have, you’ll feel it. You will always feel like something is missing. Find your purpose(s).
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
You have to be a dog, man. You have to really want it. There are no guidelines. There is no rule book. It’s just you against the world and you have to show up for yourself every time. Whether you fail or not. Show up and show out with every opportunity you get. Make the most of them. Make the most of the relationships you build with others. Be humble but don’t be a push over. Never burn a bridge unless you know it doesn’t lead anywhere and know how to swim when you do. Never be ashamed of where you come from and embrace your struggle. Embrace the process. Don’t fake it until you make it. Be yourself. Be bold. Trust me. What sets me apart is my passion and versatility. I sound nothing like any of the other artists in my city (shouts to them) and I always speak from the heart. I love music and I take inspiration from everything around me. It doesn’t matter what the direction of the music is, you will always hear ME in it.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would show them the different beaches. I’d take them all around Downtown and over the Coronado bridge. There’s a lot of good food spots here, (too many to type) but no matter what, we’re getting Mexican food at some point. It just hits different here. I’m sort of a homebody to be completely honest; I prefer to get lit at the crib nowadays, but I know a lot of places we could go. Bars, clubs, etc. just depends on how they’re feeling. We’d check out the different historical landmarks, places, museums, etc. All that good stuff. We would hit the gun range, go hiking, biking, etc. Love my city.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t be the man I am today without the love and support of my family and closest friends. They too, are like family to me. I don’t often work with people I can’t build a genuine, personal relationship with, so I have the pleasure of calling all of those I work with family. They all know who they are. Thank you for everything you do, always. There’s no way I could pay any of you back, but I will always do my best to show how much I appreciate each of you.
