We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex Abbey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alex, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
It wasn’t a thought process that started my journey it was more like a singular spark of inspiration (which makes it sound much more grand than it was). This inspiration was born out of frustration with a series of jobs, working for startups and digital publications, that fell out from under me. Time after time, I was left out in the cold by employers who didn’t understand, or didn’t care, how their business decisions would affect me and my co-workers.

The specific moment came after I had been working as a freelance writer for an entertainment news site called Movie Pilot. With zero warning, they fired almost the entire writing team choosing to “pivot to video”, leaving myself and a large group of fellow creatives with nowhere to turn. As I saw many of my fellow wayward writers announce, proudly, that they would start their own solo blog, I chose to ask for help. Three colleagues rose to the occasion, and ScreenHub Entertainment was born.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
At ScreenHub Entertainment, we are creatives, first and foremost. My favorite articles on our website are the in-depth think pieces about pop culture. Our staff has some great minds. Even when we report on entertainment news, whether on the site or in a video for social media, I am proud of the thought, research, and artistry.

I also love to support other creatives. One of my main goals at ScreenHub Entertainment is connecting with filmmakers, visual artists, and social media creators. We use those connections to help shed light on interesting discussions, like in the ‘Film & Spirits’ podcast we produce, or in the series of ‘Representation Matters’ articles where I partner with creators from marginalized groups to boost their voices on issues in pop culture.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
As a proud resident of SoCal, I would be neglecting my duties as a host if I didn’t start any local tour with a visit to one or two beaches. I would have to dedicate at least a few days to visiting a few of the iconic filming locations in and around Los Angeles. One of my favorite things about SoCal is the abundance of fun pop culture pop-up businesses, so we’d have to look up what whimsical shop, cafe, or speakeasy might happen to be in the area. Lastly, it’s back to the seaside because what Southern California trip is complete without watching the sunset over the Pacific Ocean on your last day?

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shutout to my fellow ScreenHub Entertainment founders. When we were all still reeling from a series of abrupt and unfortunate events at our former employer, the online entertainment publication Movie Pilot, we came together and started something great. They are the ones who keep me going, and they have held down the fort when I wasn’t able to give ScreenHub my 100%.
